Gourmet VS Gatsby

This past weekend had me indulging in so many yummy tastes and treats, it felt like it was my birthday. Needless to say the scale did not agree that it was such a pleasant experience .
( oh well! you only live once!! I think my scale is broken anyway.)

From Asian to Red Velvet to cupcakes to Indian and then over to spuds and mac & Cheese, I found myself realizing that whether you go to an expensive restaurant or you order online,  ( my favorite on my lazy days) you'll always find yummy food, people who know how to combine flavors and textures and make them come alive in your mouth.

I find myself fascinated by two very distinct types of food. In South Africa where I'm from we have a very distinctive type of monster sandwich if you can call it that, we refer to it as a GATSBY!!! An oversized soft roll filled with slap chips ( fries that are not crispy but soft because that's the way we like it) , a filling of your choice, it could be steak, chicken, viennas, etc. Add some salad, the right sauces and you're good to go, you do need the right spices though, my friend QV is the master of conjuring up these amazing , make you full till you want to sleep treats.
Then we have the GOURMET BURGER!! Gone are the days when a conventional burger was enough , these days we're talking pumpkin seed buns, lamb or beef burgers, truffle scented mushrooms, goat cheese mousse and plantain chips on the side ( because potatoes are being shunned as  "that food that makes my hips bigger").
Both these foods , whether ghetto or fabulous are delicious to me , I can appreciate the effort that goes into the mixing of the spices and the correct texture for the bread of the Gatsby.
I appreciate the butcher who meticulously combines those ingredients to make the perfect burger, the right amount of truffle oil that goes into that mushrooms and not letting the goat cheese overpower the hero of the dish which is the burger.
If you've  ever been to Schwarma Alley in Bahrain you'd know that you could get an amazing tasting yum delish schwarma or malgoum( different bread with fries inside) for next to nothing.

So whether you're  a gourmet foodie or a funky eatie there's no denying that anyone, anywhere can make the best tasting experience with the most pedestrian ingredients. Gatsby's are part of our culture in South Africa, they're an after the club, I'm so hungry I'll eat anything even It's its carbs food or that night when no one feels like cooking .

Can you say GOURMET!!!
Doesn't that burger look amazing !!! My personal preference would be Jalapeno burger with Pepperjack cheese, basil pesto mayo sauce and sweet potato fries( Yummy!!) The more adventurous the better!!!

A Gatsby has to be cut up and eaten with your hands
Turkey burger- because who needs more fat
The tradition is to cut it up, normally into four pieces at the most and eat it with your hands. Using a knife and fork would get you those ( are you too cool to use your hands now) stares.
We invented this right here!!
