You can't have your bread buttered on both sides .........or can you
If you grew up in Cape Town you would know that bread is definitely a staple item in most families houses. And if you don't have it in your house on a week night best believe that your Mom will send you to the shop to go get some otherwise there will be no sandwiches for school the next day.
In most memories surrounding food from childhood till now bread has always been there , our next door neighbor would make homemade loaves that she would prove for hours before putting them in the oven to be consumed. Or even if there was no lunch available you'd simply take a packet of potato chips and shove them between two slices of bread knowing they'd make an amazing snack especially if they were smoked beef flavor.
I can remember days at school when your lunch would be a surprise, not knowing which toppings your mom had used to make them, it was either a face of elation or a face looking around to swap with anyone who had a better option .
The first production of bread dates back to more than 30 000 years ago , with it being such a life saver, live giver, most affordable way to feed anyone.
The dynamics have changed in modern societies though with simple white bread not being adequate, you need seeds and dried fruit and no gluten if you please.
With the innovation of everything we are spoilt for choice and with more people leaning towards healthier options we want to make sure that we have less carbs because we all want that summer body that takes perfecting in winter.
Then you think about the comfort food during winter , hot soup with warm toasty bread and dollops of butter on top, perfect setting for a lazy day in front of the couch.
Even if the most lavish of settings bread will make an appearance whether its cucumber sandwiches at a high tea or a gourmet bread pudding the world is constantly finding ways to improve on even the simplest of ingredients.
And one of my absolute favorites would have to be a wholegrain bread with dried fruit inside , delicious yet healthy at the same time , enjoyed simply on it's own or with your favorite toppings.
And like most food is connected to a memory , my fondest "pain" memory would be of my Mom making our sandwiches in the morning for school, I would get so excited when I peeked and there was something delicious or an extra treat added, don't get me started if it was tuna mayonnaise (don't judge me).
And so my foodie friends I wish you a great week further !!!
